What is Business Management?

One definition is: Managing the co-ordination and organisation of business activities to ensure the business resources are used to maximise profitability and to generate cash.

This is a broad ranging definition but to bring it down to what it means for your business there has to be an examination of factors such as the experience and quality of the management of the business. Does the management have the controls in place meet all the business objectives e.g. sales, profit, stock control, training, efficient processes etc.

An effective method of assessing the controls is to have monthly management meetings where the managers produce their report of the business activities and results from their department against the benchmarks of budget, forecast, and national KPIs. Achievable action plans are formulated from these meetings and they are accountable, at the next meeting, for the results which are reviewed in depth followed by an updated action plan.

Business management is the responsibility of everybody in the business with the operational management board holding the accountability for the business activity and results. They will report daily (daily operating control, DOC), weekly (WOC) and monthly using the management accounts.
